Sanctuaries & Gardens

Northern Dipper is a Daoist temple founded by Ian Duncan, Li XingHui 李興輝 in order to preserve and make accessible authentic Daoist teachings in the West. The temple sits close to the Stoneykill creek and and the cold clear waterfalls nearby energetically charge the space. Rondout Natural Builders was hired for finishes on earthen floor, clay, and carpentry of temple.

The Sanctuary

High Falls

This building was designed for healing practice and the gathering of small groups of people. The sanctuary looks out over the Catskill range and sits on the edge of a tulip poplar forest. The buildings frame is tulip poplar and harvested from where the building sits. The building geometry is formed by twin pentagons each with it own pentagonal skylight that brings natural sun and moon light within. The building is insulated with straw bale in-fill and salvaged polystyrene panels. The interior finishes include earthen clay plaster walls, earthen clay floor and

natural river stone inlays collected from the peterskill.

The exterior breezeway is finished with pine siding  boards that were salvaged from the buildings foundation form work. The pentagon structures are clay coated with lime finish paint

Gardens

The Garden beds, trellis, and cottage including post and beam frame, siding flooring and roof decking were built entirely with locally harvested Hemlock.

The Fencing is locally harvested white cedar.
